Apple’s Leopard set to pounce earlier than expected

Leopard

Mac owners still snickering over some enlightening information on Vista’s development can break into manaical laughter now, as financial analyst Jesse Tortora of the Prudential Equity Group has upgraded the outlook on Apple’s stock amid reports that the new Mac OS X Leopard will strike early. Tortora believes that the new operating system will hit at the end of this month to coincide with the release of Adobe’s Creative Suite 3. Creative Suite 3 is confirmed to drop on March 27, but Leopard was previously believed to be at least a month or two away.

The move to Leopard and the release of CS 3 will likely spur those creative types out there to upgrade their hardware to the new Intel inside Macs. Thus, the belief that some serious non-iPod loot is in Apple’s future. Of course, recent reports by appleinsider indicate that Leopard is a paper tiger right now, with far too many bugs to be that close to release. Grain of salt, Apple fans, grain of salt.

[Update: According to new report, although Adobe will detail the features of Creative Suite 3 on March 27, the product will not ship until sometime later in the Spring. If CS 3 is going to be released day and date with Leopard it won’t be until April or May, putting the new Mac OS right on time.]

My but that’s a pretty leopard. Now I’m not sure if I should hold out on the MacBook I had my eye on. Would hate to buy it now and have my OS outdated 2 weeks later.

  2. Mark says:

Aren’t they due to upgrade MacBooks (the hardware, I mean) anyway?

  3. Dave M. says:

Last I read, Adobe was set to “announce” CS3 and it’s features, not release it. So, I’m not sure how this bodes for Leopard being released by the end of March.

I suspect that Leopard will be released at WWDC this June.

  4. Dave M. says:

Here is a link to the article I read that had the info on Adobe:
    http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2550

  5. David says:

Disclaimer: I am a Mac owner, I have 3 Macs (including the iMac I’m working on now)

But still… that INTERCAL story you linked? Did you read it? At the end, he said it’s just a joke.

  6. Dan says:

Even though the builds being released to developers indicate that Leopard won’t be ready for a while, I am willing to bet that those builds don’t correspond with the internal builds and that Apple has probably already finished Leopard.

  7. motu says:

If you buy a mac within a month or so of a new os release, Apple will send you the new OS for free (if I’m remembering correctly).

  8. Hays says:

Leopard is going to be released the same as it always was, not any sooner like some think. It’s way to buggy and CS3 is only going to be announced. The releases will probably be almost right around the same time. Not much new here.

  9. John Dougherty says:

Yeah I know the INTERCAL deal was just a blog joke. I included it cause I thought it was funny. Maybe I should have made that a little more clear, but as David said, it’s there for anyone who wants to read it.

As for CS 3 — I updated the story because Adobe has made it clear that although the terms “release” and “launch” have been used in conjunction with the March 27 date (and analysts subsequently predicted that the product would actually ship on that date or shortly after), what they really meant was that they are going to “announce” the details of the product.

  10. Tom says:

Has it occored to anyone that OS X 10.4.9 which apple has seeded to developers hasn’t been released yet? Why would apple spend all this time working on 10.4.9 only to release 10.5? I would love to eat my words and see leopard in a couple of weeks, but it’s just not going to happen.

  11. Enzo says:

So far, there’s only Timeline, Spaces and Core Animation. Where are all the big secrets Jobs promised? I’ve seen the developer builds and there’s not much in Leopard to brag about yet.

  12. MTC says:

With all due respect, how the hell should an analyst know when Leopard is being shipped? Those people are usually pretty damn clueless even when it comes to common sense, let alone making educated guesses on when Apple would release something.

  13. Dave M. says:

Tom, 10.4.9 is being worked on for the folks that won’t update to 10.5 when it’s released. There will be many that do not update. Even though it’s way cheaper than Vista, it’s still pretty expensive to update.

Apple will continue to update 10.4 well past when 10.5 is released. There will be a point in time when 10.4.x will stop being suppored, but that will be probably a year at least. Remember, even Microsoft hasn’t stopped updating XP just because Vista has shipped. XP will continue to be supported until 2013 or 2014 (I can’t remember now).

  14. Mac vs PC says:

The sooner the better, so many people are holding off getting a Mac so they can get one preloaded with Leopard or at least one that will have a free upgrade.

Here is an Article on why Leopard is hurting Mac sales:

  16. Higgs says:

Leopard will change the world yet again. Mac are gaining such popularity they will one day surpass Windows and they deserve this accolade

  17. andy t says:

The new features on leopard look incredible and with bootcamp you can also get the benefit, if there is one in loading windows too
