Wireless technology is getting better all the time. I just bought an N1 router from DLINK (with Gigabit LAN!) and a Belkin N1 PCI card. With local access at a staggering 300 Mbps over the air, I am fairly pleased with the performance. I do not have anything that supports Gigabit yet, but expect to have something later.
Now, researchers from Georgia Tech have devised a method to push data through the air at speeds reaching 15 gigabits a second… at one meter. Also, each additional meter between the source and the client drop the speeds 5Gbps. Okay, so at this point, you might as well buy a Gigabit router and a 50 ft ethernet cable and get 1Gbps at farther range, but this device has its advantages.
Apply this to a media center PC (I am currently building a Linux-based Media Center, coming in a future NextLust article) or a laptop on a couch right next to an access point, and the potential for awesomeness expands. While the technology is still officially unnamed, it is referred to as standard 802.15.3c. Heres to hoping that they increase the range to at least 15 meters, so that this would be a much more interesting product.

If Hollywood has taught us anything it’s that we need to fear the fuck out of the future - here is my top five reasons why.

Richard Doherty, from the infamous Doherty family and Microsoft’s program manager for Media Entertainment Convergence, slung some proverbial poo at both the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray loving manufacturers and studios. With one quick exhale of his M$ paid voice, he claimed that both formats, as well as any other optical format that is out or may come out in the future will become obsolete in five years.
I showed up just in time to scream “No Shit!” and then ran away into my troll house to wait for the next obvious statement to be spewed from someone’s mouth. Dick went on to say that at Microsoft, they would rather HD content was not on a disc at all, and also added that for the time being they are supporting HD-DVD because it has better interactive content (and Toshiba makes their XBOX 360 hardware, there is an HD-DVD add-on for the 360, the PS3 has a Blu-Ray drive, and Microsoft hates Sony- but they didn’t mention these parts).
Now that the future of disc formats is settled, and before I go back to my trollhouse for some trollhouse cookies and such, I will make another outlandish claim about the future of tech: In five years, today’s processors will be considered ancient and slow when compared to current micro computer processors.
Let’s see how that one turns out.

Hey rich face! Have more HDMI components that you have inputs? In that case you may have more money than you need, which works out well since this 4X4 HDMI splitter is gonna set you back close to 2 grand. Of course if you really need one, this puppy does cover all the bases including HDCP and HDMI.
- Switch easily between any four HDMI sources
- Distributes any of the four inputs to any or any combination of the four HDMI output displays
- Beautiful, sharp HDTV resolutions up to 1080p
- Discrete IR remote (included)
- Serial RS-232 remote port
- HDCP compliant

Apparently Intel isn’t the only one with a crystal ball into the future. At an event in Mumbai, HP showed off their “Always Connected” concepts - a section of their HP Mobile Innovations Tour. The concepts show the company’s vision of 2012 with devices like watches, tablets, computers and wallets all connected to a central hub. Many of the concepts take today’s experimental technologies like paper thin LCD screens and ultra-slim portables and make them fashionable. HP believes in the future, high-tech electronics must depart from their current “techy” look and embrace a more friendly approach to design. More of it after the jump.

The future of tech products is built upon today’s imagination, design, and inspiration. Concepts that allow consumers and manufacturers to see creative, novel, or utterly breathtaking products drive technology style and engineering forward. These are some of those concepts: (more…)

Designer Pei-Hua Huang has the right idea with his WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) concept phone. He envisages transparent screens that work as viewfinders, giving you a truer view of what it is you’re about to snap.
Of course the concept isn’t all fancy schmancy screen. It comes in an array of colors and patterns befitting of a fashionista picture hound. Who says you can’t geek out while looking good?

What are you lusting for right now? There are so many great products coming out within the next year, the next five years, and the next twenty years, and everyone has their own respective product or innovation that they are waiting for. With the eventual creation, development, and sale of all this future technology brings things just waiting to be bought, used, and become outdated.
Since most of us are humans, we have an absolutely insanely large hole inside of our bodies that needs to be filled with gadgets, toys, and new ideas. Personally, I don’t see this as an inherently bad or awful problem, since I enjoy the draw of new events and experiences (that is, of course, as long as others can control their wants).
Anyways, I thought I would ask anyone and everyone what they want next, after all, all of you readers are visiting a site called “NextLust”. So: What is coming out in the next year, the next five years, and the next twenty years that you are lusting towards? They can be products that aren’t actually invented or “official” yet.
Here are mine:
Coming out this year- nVIDIA 8900GTX or ATi X2800XTX:
As I am an avid PC gamer, I am of course looking to upgrade my computer, as my 6600GT and AMD Athlon 64 +3000 just don’t rip up games like they used to (I won’t be upgrading for about 9 months to a year though, and this system will be just fine- until Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3 come out). Of course, I do have some great choices, and plenty of time to find the money to spend on them. I may get any of these cards, depending on my new build’s budget.
From nVIDIA:
8950 GX2: 2x(550Mhz/2.0Ghz) - 192 shaders (2×96) - 256bit - 2×512MB GDDR4 - $600
8900 GTX: 700Mhz/2.2Ghz - 128 shaders - 384bit - 768MB GDDR4 - $550
8900 GTS: 600Mhz/2.0Ghz - 128 shaders - 320bit - 640MB GDDR4- $500
8900 GT: 600Mhz/1.8Ghz - 96 shaders - 256bit - 512MB GDDR3 - $400
8900 GS: 550Mhz/1.6Ghz - 96 shaders - 256bit - 256MB/512MB GDDR3 - $200/$250
8600 GTS 675Mhz/2.0Ghz - 64 shaders - 128bit - 256MB GDDR3 - $200
8600 GT 540Mhz/1.4Ghz - 64 shaders - 128bit - 128MB/256MB GDDR3 - $???/$150
8500 GT 400Mhz/800Mhz - 48 shaders - 128bit - 128MB/256MB DDR2 or GDDR3 - $79/$100
From ATi:
X2800XTX2: 575Mhz/2000Mhz - 192 Shaders (96×2) - 1024MB GDD4 @ 256bit ($600)
X2800XTX: 750Mhz/2200Mhz - 128 Shaders - 1024MB GDDR4 @ 512bit ($549)
X2800XT: 600Mhz/1800Mhz - 128 Shaders -512MB GDDR3 @ 256bit ($499)
X2800XL: 600Mhz/1800Mhz - 96 Shaders - 256MB GDDR3 @ 256bit ($399)
X2800GTO: 600Mhz/1400Mhz - 96 Shaders - 256MB GDDR3 @ 256bit ($299)
In the next five years, I will expect an SED television:
Since this should have come out in 2006, and may come out in 2007 (but will probably get pushed back again), I have become aware of the fact that this technology may never come out.
In the next twenty years, I demand a hover board!
According to the movie Back to the Future 2 (which is the time traveler’s bible), we should start expecting hover boards to come onto the market by 2015. In case you don’t want to wait 8 more years, head on over to my place for some plans to build a hover board.
So, what are you waiting for? What is your NextLust?

I’ve seen alot of Bluetooth apps in my day, but this one is a complete first for me. Someone actually took the time and energy to build a program for a cellphone to be able to drive a full size car. Sadly the source site is in a language other than the one I’m able to (barely) speak, so search-me on how they managed to pull it off.
Amazing? yes. Useful? Probably not unless you’re a secret agent.
Don’t believe it? Check out the video.

News moves fast it seems. Between writing a story and publishing a story about possible DRM-free music coming to the iTunes music store, it seems like it’s actually going to happen. EMI has announced that it’s entire catalog of music will be available on the iTunes store without DRM restrictions. Chalk one up for the consumers. This move marks the 1st true step to a record company embracing digital downloads (welcome to 1999 guys).
But here’s the rub, the DRM-free songs will cost $1.29, 30 cents more than the till now standard $.99. Talk about a crap bait and switch tactic. We’ve known that the labels haven’t been too pleased with the .99 cent price tag, and they found a way to sneak in a .30 increase.
