Viacom came out guns blazing on Tuesday in their public battle with YouTube and its parent company, Google, by filing suit in federal court for copyright infringement. While they haven’t taken to street justice just yet, they are looking to hand YouTube a serious civil beat down. According to the complaint, Viacom is seeking some stiff penalties, including possible actual damages of at least one billion dollars (cue Dr. Evil laugh now). The mega company, which owns Paramount, Dreamworks and several cable stations, is evidently slightly miffed that its copyright protected content continues to pop up on YouTube, despite last month’s demand that over 100,000 pirated clips be removed from the site.
YouTube and Google aren’t just dropping trou and waiting to be spanked though. Google’s attorney claims that YouTube is protected by a safe harbor provision in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA). The key will be whether YouTube knowingly profits on the posting of pirated content. If the case actual reaches a court, the resulting decision could determine whether a Web site is responsible for keeping pirated content off its pages without notice from the copyright holder.
In the meantime, it remains to be seen if other companies will follow Viacom into the legal arena. Will YouTube go the way of the dodo?

Wow, just wow. I cannot believe what I am reading on the front page of Oscar Torrents right now. I am a huge movie geek and like most cinema nerds am sick and tired of movie industries bullshit and I think these guys hit the proverbial nail into the old-and-busted coffin.
They pose an interesting stance, one that should be looked at with a serious frown (that’s to you Hollywood fat cats). Shouldn’t the people watch and decide who wins best picture, best actor or best cinematography? Why is it that we let faceless a-holes decide what the best movie of the year is? Why let them take three movies (the Lord of the Rings Trilogy) that are exactly the same, not give the first two any real recognition and then shower the third with as many awards as they can throw at Peter Jackson’s once fat ass?
Please support this site, and all they believe in. I think their mission statement to the guys who will try to shut them down says it all:
“You haven’t beaten us, so why not join us? Think of a new business model that doesn’t involve overpriced pieces of plastic and skanky cinemas hawking cheap carbohydrates while relying on $6/hr projectionists who can’t keep a film in focus — not to mention insulting your audiences by (to pick a few examples) surveilling us with nightvision glasses, searching bags, 30 minutes of commercials and bombarding us with ridiculous anti-piracy propaganda. Take a look at yourselves. Is it really any wonder we’re winning?”

Why pay the full price of a quality product when you can go overseas and pick it up for 98.7% off? Hell you can just join the military, ship out there and get your own pirated copy when we start bombing the hell out it in a couple weeks. Best plan ever.

Hey!Watch has announced nice little app that can let you rip and seed your favorite YouTube, Google Video and Meta Cafe movies. The whole deal sounds great in theory and it’ll be interesting to see how this whole new marriage will last. The one deal breaker for me though is that under the ‘Free Membership’ service you can only upload 10 videos a month, anymore and you’ll have to cough up $4.99 a month.
I cannot see a product that is so prone to lawsuits actually charging a monthly fee, but I’ll gladly be a leecher and get myself some “Will it Blend?” clips.

That’s right top ten lists, fear and tremble in the almighty shadow of NextLust’s Ultimate List of Mac Apps. Hopefully you learn a thing or two about applications already sitting on your hard drive and have your eyes opened ever so slightly to see how many useful freeware apps are just floating around the internet waiting for you to give them a go.
I am tentatively calling this list “Part 1″ in case I get a ton of replies with some sweet programs I just happened to miss. So without further ado:
The Ultimate List of Mac Apps Part 1
