Friday, June 8th, 2007

SteelSeries SX

There are two types of gamers; ones that know they suck, and ones that think they’re good but blame the computer, peripherals, even the game for any blunders. The second group often believes every little bit counts and so this new high-tech mousepad is for them.

The SteelSeries SX mousepad is made from fiber polished aluminum for the slickest surface and promises easy glide while mousing around. So the next time you’re on a frag-fest but fail to impresss, consider this; maybe you need a $59.95 mousepad.

Media centers seem to be all the rage nowadays, as high definition movies and television shows, as well as higher quality picture and music have started to invade the market. While some recent additions to the media center families, like AppleTV and distinguished models from several startup companies have been impressive, none have really captured the idea of replacing a Tivo, computer, amplifier, receiver, Netflix deliveries, media players, DVD player, and catch-all computer … until now.

As Alienware describes it, the Hangar 18 can do just about anything:

* Watch - Watch, pause, and record your movies, TV shows, photos, and internet videos on your widescreen TV in high definition
* Listen - Listen to all your favorite songs and artists with Hangar18’s onboard 5.1 surround sound amplifier
* Share - Wirelessly stream all your media to other PCs, mobile devices, and media extenders throughout your home.
* Download - Download content from all over the internet to one secure location to store and share with your home and others.

IBM has announced a cross-company partnership that will combine their IBM mainframes with the beefy cell broadband engine processors from Sony, creating a huge network of computers that can take over the world. At the very least, this coupling will allow game developers and web developers to push servers farther, giving users, consumers, and gamers a new era of online communities (1000 vs 1000 Battlefield anyone?).

As online environments increasingly incorporate aspects of virtual reality — including 3D graphics and lifelike, real-time interaction among many simultaneous users — companies of all types will need a computing platform that can handle a broad spectrum of demanding performance and security requirements,” said Jim Stallings, general manager, IBM System z. “To serve this market, the Cell/B.E. processor is the perfect complement to the mainframe, the only server designed to handle millions of simultaneous users.

When you rip off Sony, Microsoft, Pantech, Samsung and Nintendo

838Fakeout 03

If a device had duel sliding keypads like the Pantech Helio Ocean, a UI like Windows Mobile, a Samsung Anycall logo beneath the screen and a Sony PSP logo on the back, what would it look like? Presenting the 838 - a smartphone, camera and portable gaming device all in one.

Just take a look at these specs. 3″ 260k QVGA touchscreen, 3 megapixel camera, 3 stereo speakers and 512MB of memory. The most notable and ripped off features are the Windows Mobile UI complete with Microsoft icon and the dual sliding keypad. When used vertically the keypad reveals your standard numeric buttons. Turn the unit horizontally and the keypad reveals a game controller to play the 11 pre-installed NES games running on an emulator. Ironically if you flip the 838 over, you see a wanna-be PSP logo.

All this for $200 from the seller’s eBay store called Bigpowerseller. I never thought I’d say this but I wanna review one. Many more pictures after the jump.
