A mobile OS powered by the Sun

Savaje Phoneos

Seems the buyer of a small mobile OS developer called SavaJe was revealed to be Sun Microsystems itself. SavaJe is a Java based mobile platform aimed at manufacturers who want the flexibility of open source software combined with the power of Java. The buy out could mean Sun will take on Microsoft, Symbian, Palm and now Apple in the mobile OS market.

Things could get interesting since Sun has been looking for something new to invest in. Many games and 3rd party applications already use Java. That ubiquity could potentially give Sun a huge step-up in matching the bevy of apps available for Symbian and WinMo based phones.

Aero on Vista? That’s so last week. Check out Beryl running on Ubuntu

Honestly Microsoft, just give up. You spent the last decade coming up with a feature that can hardly compete with Apple’s five year old Exposé, and now you have a competitor that offers its open source software for free to deal with. Have you ever thought about going back to the drawing board, making something that works, doesn’t rip off your competitors and above all else: doesn’t suck? Do that for me then maybe we can talk. Maybe.

Cuba and Venezula go commie… wait

amalgam

Cuba and Venezuela decided to go open source and abandon our proprietary software and copyright laws. An interesting comment from the communications minister of Cuba equated the world’s information systems to a “battlefield” in which Cuba is the underdog fighting off imperialism.

Also interesting to note is that Richard Stallman, professional nerd and hippie, showed up to the announcement with his own analogy. He decided to take the risky domestic approach and equated software to recipes which should be altered however the user thinks would be best etc. etc. Very persuasive except that I don’t cook. Proprietary fast food ftw.
