University of Washington vs the ocean: Submarine edition

deepglider

My fellow geniuses at the University of Washington are reporting that they have developed a new autonomous submersible. One that is capable of reaching depths of nearly 9,000 feet and powered solely with the blood of a thousand under appreciated grad students.

“Deepglider opens up new research possibilities for oceanographers studying global climate change. The glider’s first trip revealed unexpected warming of water near the ocean floor, and scientists are interested in studying whether the temperatures are related to global warming.”

Two points for Al Gore and his man crush on climatology. Adios.

Wikipedia gets kicked out of college

Here’s a sad story for everyone’s favorite free online encyclopedia:

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Middlebury College history students are no longer allowed to use Wikipedia in preparing class papers. The school’s history department recently adopted a policy that says it’s OK to consult the popular online encyclopedia, but that it can’t be cited as an authoritative source by students. The policy says, in part, Wikipedia is not an acceptable citation, even though it may lead one to a citable source.

Hopefully this will only leave a small scratch on Wikipedia’s already awesome reputation. But as long as jerks like Skeletor keep ruining the fun for all of us, you can expect more colleges to follow suite.
