Ghetto blaster for the iPod generation

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

nublaster 01

Ghetto blasters never really made a comeback because audio sources have moved to external devices, not to mention how ungodly they looked. So an industrial designer name Dirk Winkel (love his name) envisaged a new ghetto blaster, comfortable to wear and compatible with any iPod-like device called the Nu Blaster.

The head of the blaster provides space for a large bass speaker while the long narrow end serves as a bass reflux tube. The curved shape makes it ergonomic to sport on your shoulder while the strap makes transport easy.

Too bad it’s concept only. Hit the jump for another picture.

JVC wood cone speakers: “Made by mother nature”

It’s thought that wood provides the absolute best in audio quality. It’s why all the great instruments are made from wood. From grand pianos to violins, if you want to top of the line, it’s made out of natural wood. JVC has decided it’s time to do the same for speakers. The cone on your average speaker is made out of paper. Here? Birch. That huge step up in material should provide a very distinct difference when it comes to the quality of the wgat you hear. Unless you’re watching Independence Day, then there’s really no helping you.

Of course cutting edge doesn’t come even remotely cheap, with a retail price of $1299. Here’s a few more stats:

  • Birch Wood Cone/Dome Diaphragms
  • 2-Way, 3-Speaker Bass Reflex Design
  • 10.5cm Wood Cone Woofer x 2 and 2cm Wood Dome Tweeter
  • Edgewise-Wound 4-Layer Voice Coil for Woofer
  • High-Energy Neodymium Magnets for Tweeter
  • Screw-Type Gold-Plated Speaker Terminals
  • Die-Cast Aluminium Speaker Frame
  • CCA (Copper-Clad Aluminium) Voice Coil for Tweeter
  • Impedance-6 ohms
  • Frequency Range- 50Hz - 50kHz
  • Sound Pressure Level- 84.5dB/W-m
  • Crossover Frequency- 3.8kHz

iPod speakers with a real kick

Look Ma, No Hands!

If you dig big feet or you just like making your tech look like it came from Toys R Us you may want to check out the SpeakerMan. It’s a cute looking little accessory that may just win over your that girly girl you’re stalking. The SpeakerMan retails for $20. For that price you can probably expect lackluster sound quality so audiophiles beware. The nice thing is that if your album art has a face on it it’s like getting a live private concert… from a deformed version of your favorite artist.

CES 2007: Curiosities

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

The Consumer Electronics Show has a lot of what you’d expect in the way of products for your home, computer or entertainment center, but a few things are just beyond classification or are of particular note. I wanted to share a few of my findings as I come across them.

You may have seen these motorized rodeo devices before, and as strange as they seem in any context, they were very out of place in their setting here at CES. The majority of onlookers gave puzzled and amused looks as a video demonstration showed Chinese girls in cowboy hats singing the praises of the rodeo chair and what it could do for your inner thighs.
