Useless products of yesteryear

While browsing the ‘Old School Xbox Gear‘ section of xboxgearstore.com,  I stumbled on a product that just screams, “Hey, you know what could really benefit with a Xbox logo slapped on it? A cell phone charger!” Wait, what?

It looks like all you have is plug in that … ugh, headset plug(?) into your phone and then connect the USB part into your computer or something. After that laborious task you’re supposed to sit there and think about how much better it would been for you to waste $4.50 on a Happy Meal instead, at least that would of come with a useless toy you can actually get some enjoyment out of. Sadly the product itself is currently out of stock which begs the question, as most desperate questions do, why keep this travesty of an accessory on your site if you’re not going to sell it? Maybe just to taunt us, who knows.

Toshiba 16Gb

One can never have too many gigs especially when you’re toting around pirated music and videos. Fortunately for us, Toshiba saw fit to keep cramming more memory into their line of slick USB flash drives. Their latest offering pimps out with 16GB and has embedded Vista security features, whatever that means.

Oh and look, it’s white too!

A case of stinky…thumb?

In the category of we didn’t really need it, but what the hell goes this scent-emitting USB device. Before you get your hopes up about dual functionality, I should tell you that these things are only fragrance dispensers — there is no internal memory. The Web site makes mention of scents like rose and lavender, but maybe they should consider scents for a more devious use. Priced cheaply enough, foul-scented versions could be covertly placed in a co-worker’s USB ports to ‘plant a smell’. Secretly knowing the reason behind your co-worker’s cries of “My God, what is that smell?” could be a lot of fun.

That title really is a statement of fact. 16 USB ports is a ton. Throw in an external power supply and the ability to connect to 2 machines at once and you’ve got a pretty good solution for all those cables you’re always swapping in and out of the one USB port on the front of your machine. Or at least you shouldn’t need to worry about keeping all your stuff plugged in at once. It’s rather un-sexy looking though.

Gibson rocks your USB port

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

Gibson has taken a classic musical instrument and shrunk it down to be a…portable storage solution? A 1959 Les Paul Standard was chosen to kick off Gibson’s Signature Series flash drives, and I guess it’s a good choice as it is truly a classic - but did we really need a mini-guitar USB drive?

I do like how there is a mini case, and how the USB cable plugs into the bottom of the drive, just as a 1/4″ cable would on a real guitar. What I don’t like is that we all already have too many USB key drives.

Stats:
-1GB of storage capacity
-USB 2.0 transfer rates (480Mbps)
-Data retention up to 9 years
-LED indicator
-Waste of money
