OMG 30 FPS!

There are certain moments in history that define what it is to be a geek.

For the fine men and women at NASA, receiving a SGI computer with 1,024 dual core Intel Itanium 2 processors and 4 terabytes of RAM must the penultimate moment of their lives.

According to NASA, the supercomputer will generate 13.1 teraflops of calculating power and will run a single copy of Linux, making it the largest Linux single system image in the world.

NASA also mentions that they have acquired an ultra-dense 240TB SGI InfiniteStorage 10000 system to handle all their data storage needs.

According to NASA’s Dr. Piyush Mehrotra:

“Supercomputers play a critical role in many NASA missions, including new space vehicle design, global climate studies and astrophysics research. We look forward to evaluating SGI’s latest HPC offerings as part of our long-term technology refresh effort.”

Although it’s probably foolish to disagree with a rocket scientist, and space exploration is important, if I were Dr. Mehrotra, I’d get this thing running Crysis posthaste!

    Roligt, sannerligen.

Do you think NASA will let me buy that computer from them? I have about $800, I think that sounds fair.

interesting thought that popped into my head, it has 13 tereflops of processing power (that is a lot). According to Sony teh PS3 has 2 tereflops of power. So that means that NASA could have just connected 7 PS3s together right? 7 * 8 (# of SPUs in a PS3) = 56. Somehow 56 Cell cores and the RAM to go with it is as powerful as 2,048 Intel Itanium cores with 4TB of RAM. Something doesn’t seem to add up here.

NASA scientist: Yet Myspace.com is STILL SLOW LOADING UP??? I NOW KEEL MYSELF…WITH DEATH.

    Well the Ps3= Sony
    Sony like to lie… lol
Look at the ps2 tech demos, nothing close to that ever appeared on the console…
When they revealed the ps2 they said it could Push 66 million Polygons a Second with its Emotion Engine, Well if it had to Display anything this fell to about 15 million, if it had to have textures, lighting, movement or any calculation it dropped even further…
Essentially Ps3 core is good, very good, but not what sony claim…

“Penultimate” doesn’t mean “ultimate of ultimates” it means “second to last.”
