That’s right top ten lists, fear and tremble in the almighty shadow of NextLust’s Ultimate List of Mac Apps. Hopefully you learn a thing or two about applications already sitting on your hard drive and have your eyes opened ever so slightly to see how many useful freeware apps are just floating around the internet waiting for you to give them a go.

I am tentatively calling this list “Part 1″ in case I get a ton of replies with some sweet programs I just happened to miss. So without further ado:

1. Adium

What is it?
Adium is a free instant messaging application for Mac OS X that can connect to AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo.

2. Azureus

What is it?
Azureus implements the BitTorrent protocol using java language and comes bundled with many invaluable features for both beginners and advanced users.

3. Bittorrent bittorrent.jpg

What is it?
BitTorrent is a peer-assisted, digital content delivery platform that provides the fastest, most efficient means of distributing, discovering, and consuming large, high-quality files on the Web.

4. CallWave

What is it?
Send free text messages anywhere in the world from your computer. No cell phone required.

What is it?
Sick of having to open up Photoshop, or another graphics program just so you can get a color value? Tired of not having a quick and easy way of converting Hex values to RGB, CMYK or HSV? What is it?

9. Divx

What is it?
DivX is a digital media format that puts the tools of digital expression directly into the hands of the people.

10. Drive-in

What is it?
Drive-in is an innovative application that allows you to store your personal DVD movie library on your Mac. It is now available as a public beta. Using Drive-in you can create an image of a DVD disc on your laptop or home entertainment system. The image preserves the quality, navigation and special features of the original DVD and can be played using Apple’s DVD Player or Front Row.

11. FFView

What is it?
FFView is a fast OpenGL-powered picture viewer a la ACDsee (2.x). It is aimed at letting you read manga or other comics onscreen (windowed & fullscreen mode). Features include fast prefetching, smooth panning, voice commands, 2-page mode, a magnifying lens, the ability to browse pictures inside archives (.rar/.cbr, .zip/.cbz/, .pdf) and sticky per-picture options.

12. File Buddy 9

What is it?
Search
for files and folders using a wide variety of criteria without the use of indexing files. Use Viewers™ to view the content of graphic and movie files in lists. Use the Info window to examine and modify file attributes not available in the Mac OS X Finder. Use one of the many options for renaming groups of files or folders. Find and repair broken aliases.

What is it?

14. Google Earth

What is it?

15. Google Notifier

What is it?
The Google Notifier is an application that shows you alerts in your menu bar, so you can see when you have new Gmail messages or upcoming Google Calendar events without having to open a web browser. Download

16. Gran Paradiso

What is it?
Gran Paradiso Alpha 1 is an early developer milestone for the next major version of Firefox that is being built on top of the next generation of Mozilla’s layout engine, Gecko 1.9. Gran Paradiso Alpha 1 is being made available for testing purposes only, and is intended for web application developers and our testing community. Current users of Mozilla Firefox should not use Gran Paradiso Alpha 1.

17. iAlertU

What is it?
iAlertU is the first of its kind alarm system for your Apple MacBook computer. Basically iAlertU is a car alarm for your Mac. iAlertU uses the built in sudden motion sensor (SMS) device to detect movement of your MacBook and triggers an audible and visual alarm. The alarm can also be triggered by keyboard and mouse/trackpad movement.

What is it?
HandBrake is a GPL’d multiplatform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter. HandBrake was originally available on the BeOS, but now has been ported over to MacOS X and to GNU/Linux. A Windows port is being worked on.

19. iStopMotion

What is it?
The world of Stop Motion (or also called Claymation) Animation now comes to Mac OS X with Boinx iStopMotion. Used by educators, professional and amateur film makers all over the world to create astonishing work, iStopMotion is the tool of choice for this fascinating technique.

20. iStumbler

What is it?

iStumbler is the leading wireless discovery tool for Mac OS X, providing plugins for finding AirPort networks, Bluetooth devices and Bonjour services with your Mac. Release 97 updates the user interface to the fancy new polished metal look including an iTunes style source list and finally provides sortable tables for the AirPort and Bluetooth plugins.

21. iWeb

What is it?
An easy to use web creator which comes bundled on most newer Macs. Creates web pages and blogs easily but lacks any HTML tweaking.

22. iWork

What is it?
Two applications, Pages and Keynote. Pages is an easy to use flyer, newsletter, journal and poster creator. Keynote is Apple’s answer to Microsoft’s Powerpoint. Both come pre-loaded on most newer Macs.

23. KisMac

What is it?
Passive Stumbling (now on AirPort and AirPort Extreme cards) - you can find hidden networks, tunnels, and see probe requests.

24. Limewire

What is it?
LimeWire is a file sharing program running on the Gnutella Network. It is open standard software running on an open protocol, free for the public to use. LimeWire allows you to share any file such as .mp3s, .avis, .jpgs, .tiffs, etc. Limewire is written in Java, and will run on Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Sun, and other computing platforms.

25. MacTheRipper

What is it?
MacTheRipper is a free DVD ripper (extractor) for Mac OS X. It can extract commercial DVD movies to your hard drive, minus all the copy protections and region controls put in place by DVD publishers. You can then use various tools to burn the movie back to DVD-R for use in DVD players, or convert the movie to different formats for playback with a variety of devices.

What is it?
NetNewsWire can fetch and display news from thousands of different websites and weblogs, making it quick and easy to keep up with the latest news

What is it?
Paparazzi! is a small utility for Mac OS X that makes screenshots of webpages.

28. Picasa Web Albums Uploader

What is it?
The Picasa Web Albums Uploader is a small application just for uploading your photos to your web album — simply drag photos from the Finder and click the Upload button.

29. PodTube

What is it?
1-click download / encode for iPod / add to iTunes of videos from:

- Youtube.com
- Dailymotion.com
- Vids.myspace.com

EDIT: This was once free, now it’s $5. I myself don’t normally buy web apps but PodTube does a lot for it’s price.

30. Private Screening

What is it?
Turn your Macintosh, your big screen TV, and your 5.1 audio components into the ultimate home theater system. Just drag and drop your existing library of VIDEO_TS folders into Private Screening’s library, add DVD artwork, and then organize your playlists.

31. Quinn

What is it?
Quinn is an implementation of a popular falling-blocks game, which, according to the Tetris Company, must not be named here.

32. SketchFighter 4000

What is it?
Remember those super-cool space ships you doodled on graph paper in Middle School? Pen strokes furiously waging massive intergalactic battles in History class with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance? Well they have sprung to life in SketchFighter 4000 Alpha!

What is it?
Skype is a little piece of software that lets you make free calls to anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world.

34. Taco HTML Edit

What is it?
s a full-featured HTML editor and PHP editor distributed as freeware. As an HTML editor, Taco HTML Edit empowers its users to rapidly create their own web sites. It is designed exclusively for Mac OS X and has many advanced features including spell checking, live browser previewing, PHP previewing, syntax checking, and much more.

35. Toast

What is it?
Roxio Toast® 8 sets the standard for burning CDs, DVDs, and now Blu-ray discs on the Mac.
NOTE: I had trouble finding a free trial, but this is the burning program most mac users prefer.

What is it?
Transmission is a free, lightweight BitTorrent client. It features a simple, intuitive interface on top on an efficient, cross-platform back-end.

What is it?
Easy to use FTP client.

38. VirtueDesktops

What is it?
“VirtueDesktops” is a virtual desktop manager for Apple’s Mac OS. It offers features, eye candy and configurable options that no other desktop manager on the mac has added yet, and is under active development. - Translation: You can do this narley cube spin effect for multiple desktops.

39. VLC

What is it?
VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, …) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

What is it?
A Wiki as a native application. Take notes, link and organize your thoughts.

What is it?
For Mac users who enjoy the simplicity of a typewriter, but live in the digital world.

What is it?

What is it?

What is it?

What is it?

What is it?

What is it?

    First, Gloubibou, I use also HoudahSpot, I agree with you this app have to be in this list. This is a killer app for my point of view.

    I would like also to add OmniOutliner, TextMate, graphicConverter, ComicLife, BitRocket, Colloquy, CyberDuck, AppZapper.

    Hey guys, thank you for your comments. I know I am missing some must haves like Quicksilver and Houdah, but that’s what part 2 is for. Please just state what you would like to see added and you will be credited accordingly, I would like this is be a community effort and get the biggest, most valuable list out there on NextLust, thanks.

    I love the list, but several of the programs are not “useful freeware apps … just floating around the internet waiting for you to give them a go” but instead apps that one must purchase to continue using or to use fully (e.g., Delicious Library and File Buddy).

    Also I would recommend adding OpenOffice, NeoOffice, GiMP, Cyberduck, Text Wrangler, AbiWord, Flock, WriteRoom, Pathway, and Music IP Mixer (the free version).

    Very good list, a lot of nice apps in her that I haven’t gotten a chance to check out.

    Obvious missings I see are Quicksilver and an RSS (NetNewsWire Lite for me, because it’s free :P )
